Description

A checklist of mammal (Mammalia) species that have been recorded in Vermont, USA. This checklist is part of a statewide checklist of all animals, plants and fungi being prepared by the Vermont Atlas of Life. The Vermont Life List (VLL) is aimed at being a comprehensive catalogue of all known species of organisms found in Vermont. Like all science, VLL is a work in progress. Many taxonomic groups remain deficient. The goal of the VLL is to list every distinct species in each taxonomic group from aphids to zooplankton. At present, some taxonomic groups are complete and updated as needed, while others are lacking experts to help determine the faunal list for Vermont. For centuries, scientists have labored to discover and describe the diversity of life here in Vermont and beyond, and discoveries are still being made. The VLL database uses a set of generally accepted references, augmented by recent scientific literature and expert opinion, to establish a standard scientific name for every species and their hierarchical classification. Generally, VLL follows the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) for authoritative taxonomic information on plants, animals, and fungi of North America.

This checklist is derived from: A checklist of mammals by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department; Osgood, F. L. (1938). The mammals of Vermont. Journal of Mammalogy, 19(4), 435-441. DOI: 10.2307/1374228; Vermont Small Mammal Atlas (https://www.northwoodscenter.org/wordpress/forest-stewardship-institute-fsi/small-mammal-atlas/) and other sources. Distribution data and other information was also captured from the historic Osgood (1938) publication.
