2022-02-08 eng Bees collected or recorded during pollinator surveys on two experimental Milkweed farms as part of a University of Vermont Milkweed study run by Samantha Alger and the UVM Agricultural Extension. https://www.uvm.edu/sites/default/files/media/2018_Milkweed_Production_Trials_Combined_Rpt.pdf https://www.uvm.edu/sites/default/files/media/2019_Combined_Milkweed_Report.pdf Three study plots were created in each of two large fields dedicated to milkweed production. Surveys were done multiple times during the flowering period in both 2018 and 2019. Specimens were only collected when seen visiting milkweed, but during each survey 10 minutes was spent visually morphotyping flower visitors of any flower in the plots. Experienced observers recorded and counted bumblebee species when possible. Target netting off Milkweed flowers for 10 minutes in 3 study plots per site per visit. Specimens collected into kill jars for later pinning. Two farms in Northern Vermont Potential pollinators were recorded in large fields of Milkweed. Both visual surveys and collections were done multiple times per season while the milkweed was blooming. Flower visits of non-collected morphotyped insects were recorded for 10 minutes for both milkweed and other flowers in the plots. An additional 10 minutes was spent collecting visitors to Milkweed flowers. Bumblebees were identified to species in the field by experienced observers when possible. Other observers collected specimens for later determination. Exact protocol for the 2017 pilot is unknown. Determinations by Spencer Hardy and Samantha Algers (field ID's only).
