Description

From 2002 to 2007 volunteer butterfly enthusiasts spent thousands of hours in the field in an effort to record the status and distribution of Vermont butterflies. Coupled with this survey was an effort to record all sightings of giant silkmoths (Saturniinae) that were found. As part of the effort, public and private natural history museums were visited to record past records of these species too. This effort continues today as naturalists find and report their sightings via the Vermont Atlas of Life on iNaturalist.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 87 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

From 2002 to 2007 volunteer butterfly enthusiasts spent thousands of hours in the field in an effort to record the status and distribution of Vermont butterflies. Coupled with this survey was an effort to record all sightings of giant silkmoths that were found. Additionally, private and public natural history collections were visited to record any historic specimens that were present. Four species of silkmoths were reported during the survey from 2002-2007: Cecropia Silkmoth (18 records), Promethea Silkmoth (7 records), Polyphemus Moth (10 records), and Luna Moth (28 records). Columbia Silkmoth (no historic records in Vermont, but found nearby in Quebec) and the exotic Ailanthus Silkmoth (one historic record) were not reported. It is difficult to determine if these moths are truly rare or if the paucity of records simply reflected observers focusing on butterflies as this was completed as a smaller companion project with the Vermont Butterfly Survey.
