Description

This dataset contains select insects collected from two malaise traps located in Orleans County, Vermont, USA. The Malaise traps were set a few feet above the ground, with one in a suburban garden and the other in a rural yard at the interface between a large wetland complex and mixed hardwood forest. Collection vials were retrieved every few weeks as necessary during the growing season. All bees (Anthophila) and lady beetles (Coccinellidae) collected were identified and included in this dataset. Some other insects were included as incidental records. Ichneumonid wasps (Ichneumonidae) and other taxonomic groups will be added as they are processed and determined.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 32 records.

Sampling Methods

Malaise traps set a few feet above the ground, one in a suburban garden, the other in a rural yard at the interface between a large wetland complex and mixed hardwood forest. Collection vials were retrieved every few weeks as necessary through the growing season.

Method step description:

  1. Insects were stored in ethanol. Bees were rinsed, pinned, and labeled following standard protocols. Some distinctive non-bees were not pinned but counted and preserved in separate vials with ethanol. Remaining insects were shipped to Brandon Claridge for Ichneumonid work and further distribution of additional taxa.
