Description
We collected fairy shrimp (Anostraca: Chirocephalidae) from 32 vernal pools in Vermont, USA during spring in 2022 through 2025. This effort has so far recorded four species. In 2022, we found Knob-lipped Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus bundyi), which was previously recorded in Vermont, and Intricate Fairy Shrimp or Smooth-lipped Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus intricatus), a new state record in 2022. Both species are widespread across North America, but the Intricate Fairy Shrimp is considered rare in nearby Massachusetts, where it is listed as a “Species of Special Concern.” In 2025, two additional species were recorded, both new state records: Springtime Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus vernalis), and Ethologist Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus serratus), which is also a new record for New England.
